Professor MD PhD Maciej Śmietański

A graduate of the Medical University of Gdańsk, where he continued to work after his graduation until 2009 as a coordinator of a hernia management work group and a leader of the Polish Hernia Study Group. In 2009, he started to create a centre for hernia management and education in herniology in Puck, at which he worked until 2018. For last three years, he have been leading his own hernia management team at the Swissmed hospital in Gdańsk. He has also continued teaching students at the Medical University of Gdańsk.

He was a member of the Videosurgery Section and the Herniology Section (now he is the Section Chairman) of the Association of Polish Surgeons and a Secretary for Science of the European Hernia Society (EHS). In 2009, he was one of the creators of the National Register of Inguinal Hernia Surgeries (KROPP). Since 2009, he has been a head of the research consortium of GUMed and PG in a programme “Improvement in abdominal wall hernias management with synthetic implants”.

Professor Śmietański is an author or co-author of over 70 publications in scientific journals, and the editor of the Polish Guidelines for Groin Hernia Management. He was a visiting lecturer in many European Union countries, the U.S., Russia, and China. In 1999–2003, he was a member of the EU Hernia Trialists Collaboration, and in 2009 he co-created the European Guidelines for Groin Hernia Management and the EHS classification of abdominal hernias. In 2017–2019 he was one of the leaders in development of the world guidelines for groin hernia management (most frequently cited publications in the literature on hernia treatment in the world in last three years). Until 2020, a deputy director of the European Registry of Abdominal Wall Hernias (EuraHS).

The main projects include:

  1. The Polish Hernia Study Group (two multicentre RCT studies concerning light materials in the inguinal hernia surgery - publications in Hernia, Br J Surg) - the project leader in 2003–2012.
  2. The European group for implementation of guidelines for groin hernia management 2008–2011 (implemented under a scientific grant of the European Hernia Society) - a group member (publication in Hernia)
  3. Research Consortium GUMed/PG (subject: Optimisation of abdominal wall hernia management with synthetic implants. HAL 2010. Grant under POIG (the National Cohesion Strategy) - The Consortium Head - 2009–2012 (publications in J Biomech, Surg Endosc)
  4. The Polish Group for standardisation of parastomal hernia treatment (under the grant of the Association of Polish Surgeons) - The project head in 2011–2013
  5. A Study team on the postpartum dysfunctions of the anterior abdominal wall. The team leader since 2018.
  6. A group for development of the customised hernia implant (with TZMO/Tricomed) from 2018

In 2020 he was granted the degree of the Master of Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts at the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermdia, under Professor Grzegorz Klaman. An author of over 20 individual and collective exhibitions.

Dr hab. Eng. Krzysztof Karbowski, prof. PK

Mechanical engineer, a graduate of the Cracow University of Technology. At the beginning of his academic career, he focused on systems for control of manufacturing processes based on artificial intelligence (PhD on the use of neural networks - 1997). Then he moved to computer modelling in reverse engineering systems and their use in medicine (habilitation in 2009), and he has been working in that field to this day.

He is one of authors - in cooperation, amongst others, with Tricomed S.A. - of individually tailored cranial bone prostheses (personalised Codubix), orbital wall implants (Codubix Orbital Wall 3D), compression garments for rehabilitation of burn scars (Codopress), and hernia implants (Optomesh 3 D ILAM).

Currently, he works on computer modelling of the airflow in otolaryngology.

He is a professor of the Cracow University of Technology, teaching students and supervising bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral theses in engineering .

As a hobby, he constructs and pilots racing drones.

Dr hab. Eng. Witold Sujka

A graduate of the Faculty of Process Engineering and Environmental Protection of Lodz University of Technology - in the field of Environmental Engineering. In 2008 he obtained the title of Doctor of Technical Sciences in the field of Chemical Engineering. In 2020, he achieved the Post-doctoral degree in the field of Materials Science. He also graduated from Chemical Engineering International Summer School in Dortmund in 2001 .

Throughout his professional career, he has been involved in the medical and pharmaceutical industry in the field of product development and implementation of innovative solutions. Since 2008, he has been permanently associated with the company TRICOMED SA, where since 2012 he has been employed as the President of the Management Board.

From 2019, a member of the Council of the Institute of the Łukasiewicz Research Network - Textile Research Institute in Łódź. In 2018, he participated in an expert panel for the National Center for Research and Development dedicated to the INNOTEXTILE sector program related to the textile industry. In 2016, he was appointed a Member of the Innovation Council of the Lodz Region by the Marshal of Lodz. Co-organizer and member of the Program Council of the INNOVATEX Textile Technical Fair.

Participant, speaker at conferences and industry congresses both in the country and abroad. The creator, co-creator of many implemented products and technologies, which have been awarded national and international medals and awards, including:

  1. The Łódź Award - Eureka! for Tricomed SA and the Lodz University of Technology for the development and implementation of mesh implants (Optomesh Ultralight surgical meshes, Dallop NM Ultralight urological tape for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and G-mesh gynecological meshes); 2018
  2. Gold medal for the "Optomesh Ultralight Surgical Meshes" Seoul, Seoul International Invention Fair, South Korea; 2018
  3. Gold medal with a special award for G-Mesh gynecological meshes, Cluj-Napoca, Pro Invent, Romania; 2019
  4. Gold medal with a special award for orbital bone prostheses "Codubix Orbital Wall 3D prosthesis", Inova CROATIA - 43rd edition of the International Invention Fair; 2018
  5. Gold medal for Dallop NM Ultralight urology tape, 3rd International iCan Invention Innovation Competition in Canada, Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills; 2018

Dr hab. Eng. Sujka is the author and co-author of over 40 papers in scientific journals and a co-author of 8 patents. The most important patents include:

He managed many research projects that received funding from national funds as part of competitions organized by the National Center for Research and Development and the European POIR Horyzont 2020. The main projects include:

  1. "Hemostatic, dual-use resorbable dressings" implemented under Measure 4.1 of the Smart Growth Operational Program 2014-2020 co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, 2018-2021, NCBiR
  2. "Biodegradable porous chitin ester dressings" implemented under the Targeted Project, 2011-2014, NCBiR
  3. "Development of technology for the production of innovative vascular patches" implemented as part of the Targeted Project, 2011-2014, NCBiR

He has also implemented and managed commercial projects, including:

  1. "Surgical meshes made of yarn containing silver and 3D meshes", 2014-2020
  2. "Development of ultra-light polypropylene meshes for the treatment of hernias and pelvic floor meshes", 2013-2017

In 2019, he was nominated in the "Personality of the Year 2019" competition in the Business category, awarded by the Editorial Board of "Dziennik Łódzki" and "Express Illustrated", taking second place in Łódź. He was also awarded among the 10 best micro and small entrepreneurs in the competition "Manager of the Lodz Region of the Year 2019".
